Welcome to the Virginia Collage Society Website

"... to foster the appreciation and interest in the recognized medium of collage. Collage has only been identified and defined during the twentieth century. The NCS, Inc. advances the stature of collage as a major art medium and assists in the public education through exhibits and workshops, lectures and publications."

President’s Message

Happy Spring Everyone!
At long last the winter snows seem behind us. I hope the cold days of winter didn’t stop the flow of creativity. On February 15th some of our members had the most delightful time at the “Small Piece” workshop held at Mary Melton’s resident community room at the Warsaw on Floyd Avenue. Mary’s warm hospitality welcomed us with a fire in the fireplace, coffee with exotic creams, delicious treats and a table covered with generous “giveaways. We had a lovely productive day despite the cold rain outside.

Now is the time to renew dues of $25. If you can not be at the meeting, please mail your check to our new treasurer, Beverly Lockwood, 9108 Donora Drive, Richmond, Virginia 23229-4511. We are most grateful to her for taking the job of treasurer. It is a pleasure to announce we have two new members, Sandee Johnson of Bedford, Virginia. and Danie Janov from Christiansburg, Virginia

The 2010 WISH YOU WERE HERE 13th ANNUAL POSTCARD SHOW will be held at The Mansfield Art Center, June 20, 1010 – July 25, 2010. Entries must be mailed no later than June 11th. March Program

Jan Hodges was born in Amarillo, Texas--moved to Richmond in 1974 (dad a prof at VCU), went to Freeman. Majored in Biology at W&M, went to grad school in Marine Biology at W&M--worked at VIMS (Virginia Institute of Marine Science) for 10 years. Quit to go back to school--culinary school in Charleston, South Carolina, worked as a pastry chef for 6 years. Took a sabbatical, started taking art classes, met people at Crossroads and Artworks and never went back to the kitchen.

Jan has always done some kind of artwork, even through other careers--mostly fiber arts (quilting, knitting)--still close to that early inspiration (for example, stitching on paper, using silk painting techniques in the paper decorating). Has taken classes in Art Quilting (2003) and Installation (2004) at Penland School of Craft in North Carolina, both big influences on my thoughts and work. I'm still doing the paper/fiber/mixed media/collage type work, and there is a lot more I want to do in that direction, but also am moving toward a much more conceptual and installation type of artwork.

Kudos & Etc.

Mary Melton was awarded 2nd Place in the March all media show at Art Works.

Dare Boles has two pieces of art in the current show at the Montpelier Center. The show, called "Feel Good Giving" opens Friday March 12, 6 to 9pm.

Marti Fann won 3rd Place in the February show at the Petersburg Regional Art Center with her painting Victorian Ladies II. Marti has a show now until April 19th at 1212 Gallery.

We have a new member, Dr. Dani Janov, a retired art professor now living in Christensburg, and mixed-media artist . She hopes to come to some of our meetings. Dani has taught work shops at Shrine Mont with Emma Lou.

Paper Decorating Workshop
Jan Hodges, mixed-media artist

Add color and texture to plain paper to create one-of-a-kind pieces which can be used for collage, mixed media, or as a background for painting. We will cover several watercolor and silk painting techniques (including use of resists and texturing) which may be used individually or in combination to build layers of color. Participants will create a collection of finished and in-progress papers, learn about different kinds of pigments and their possibilities, and (hopefully) have fun trying out new techniques.

Saturday, May 1st, 2010, 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Crossroads Art Center in the Rhoda MacCallum Gallery Fee: $95 ($85 for Virginia Collage Society Members

Most supplies are included -- detailed list of what is supplied and what is needed will be provided to registrants. Morning and afternoon snack included; lunch NOT included. Minimum 10 participants, maximum 18. Registration and payment due by April 17, 2010.
