President’s Message
Greetings VCS Members:
I have been thinking about our 2012 poster idea since our meeting in September. I like all of the ideas we floated, so let’s go with more than one. If you have done or started on a poster idea that includes the words (Celebrating 100 years of Collage as a Fine Art – 1912-2012, etc.), go for it. If not, perhaps just give me a photocopy or hard copy of one (or more) of your collages. You could scan it on your computer, print a copy from your photos, or make a photocopy of the piece itself (like at Kinkos). It could be any collage, any subject you have done. I just need a “copy” that I (or a group) could assemble into a Warhol-quilt type assemblage and then overlay the words over the assembled group of collages. The photo image you give me should not be larger than 9”x12”. It may also be postcard size. Send me your photocopies anytime before, or give it to me at the January meeting. Feel free to include several photos of several collages. Call if you have questions (804-795-5331). My address mailing is: 7621 Dowdy Drive, Richmond, VA 23231-6444

The day-of-delivery will be about January 1, 2011. Please e-mail David Turner and let him know if you are willing to participate in this exhibition. He will keep you posted on the details. So he can plan, let him know as soon as possible. His e-mail address is dt.lcsw@gmail.com.

The National Collage Society, Inc. (NCS, Inc) is a non-profit art education foundation with headquarters in Hudson, Ohio. The purpose of this organization is to educate the public about the only new fine art medium of the 20th Century, collage. Collage is defined as a work of art with another layer glued on the surface. It was found in many craft forms until 1912 when George Braque glued a piece of wallpaper on the surface of one of his paintings and created fine art. He was sharing a studio with Pablo Picasso in southern France and they both pursued this new medium extensively. Their collages can now be found in museums around the world.
NCS, Inc was founded by Gretchen Bierbaum in 1982, then incorporated in Ohio and obtained the IRS classification 501 C 3. Membership has spread around the world with web presence www.nationalcollage.com.
Each year a new three-person jury selects the Annual Exhibit from hundreds of entries. A museum curator, art history professor and professional collage artist provide a balance of opinions to maintain a high standard of collage and assemblage.
Assemblage is 3-dimensional collage.
